M L.P-E., I S.V., A V.S., K E.N. (2004): Effect of atrazine on glutathione levels, glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase activities in pea and wheat plants. Plant Protect. Sci., 40: 16–20. Changes were studied in the endogenous level of glutathione (total and oxidised), and in the amount of free thiol groups as caused by the herbicide atrazine on two species of plants with different sensitivity to it.The activities of two enzymes related to glutathione metabolism (glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase) were also determined. The application of the herbicide on leaf increased the levels of total and oxidised glutathione in pea and wheat plants. Increased activity glutathione S-transferase in wheat plants was found.

Metabolic bases for differences in sensitivity of two pea cultivars to sulfur dioxide.

An oxidative chain reaction of sulfite initiated by the superoxide ion produced in the Mehler reaction has been implicated in the damage of plants exposed to sulfur dioxide. The toxicity of SO(2) may be alleviated by free radical scavenging systems acting to terminate this chain reaction. Hence, the relative sensitivity of plants to SO(2) toxicity could depend on differences in the responses of...

Modulating Role of Panax Ginseng in Phase - II Reaction of Hepato - Biotransformation in Albino Rats Following Mercuric Chloride Intoxication

Introduction: The fate of xenobiotics that is present, increasing day by day. The increasing fates altered or inhibit the metabolic activities like detoxification and biotransformation. Methods: The present study highlights this slow biotransformation and detoxification on the basis of specific enzymes which have a say in assessment of mercuric chloride toxicity and modulation by Panax ginse...

Effect of silicon supplementation on wheat plants under salt stress

Heavy metals are the cause of major abiotic stresses in plants and a principal contributor to environmental pollution in recent decades. This study investigated the effects of exogenous hydrogen sulfide on the ascorbate-glutathione cycle in the leaves of coriander seedlings under copper stress. Results showed that copper stress not only reduced APX and GR activities but also decreased leaf AsA,...

Effect of water stress on the chloroplast antioxidant system: I. Alterations in glutathione reductase activity.

The effect of water stress on glutathione reductase and catalase activities was evaluated in leaf blades of field-grown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Wheat was sown at two seeding rates under both irrigated and dryland conditions. Flag leaves from dryland plants sown at 60 kilograms/hectare showed no change in either glutathione reductase or catalase activities per unit leaf area, while ...

CHANGES IN GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE ACTIVITY AND ZEARALENONE CONTENT IN SUSCEPTIBLE AND TOLERANT WHEAT HEADS INOCULATED WITH FUSARIUM GRAMINEARUM, THE CAUSAL AGENT OF FUSARIUM HEAD SCAB

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity pattern was determined in tolerant (cv. Sumai#3) and susceptible (cv. Falat) wheat heads inoculated with Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of head scab disease (FHB), during various developmental stages. GST specific activity exhibited a transient pattern in Sumai#3 reaching a maximum level at the milk stage and declining thereafter. GST level in Su...
